Across the Big Blue Sea: Good Intentions and Hard Lessons in an Italian Refugee Home by Katja Meier

Rattigan based his story and characters in part on his secret relationship with Kenny Morgan, and the aftermath following the end of their relationship. Other actresses who have portrayed Hester Collyer include Penelope Keith. Prior to Rattigan's coding of his relationship with Morgan into the heterosexual relationship between Hester and Freddie, his first draft of the play more specifically treated the relationship between the lead characters as a homosexual relationship, and also hinted that the reason for the striking off of Miller, the ex-doctor in the play, from the register was due to Miller's homosexual preferences. Taking place over the course of one day, the play begins with the discovery of Hester Collyer in her flat by her neighbours, after Hester has failed in an attempt to commit suicide by gassing herself. Their relationship was physical and passionate, but his ardour eventually cooled, leaving her emotionally stranded and desperate. Initially unemployed, Freddie eventually takes a post in South America.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April G Tucholke – review

Things go best when we all work together! This light-hearted tale will tickle the funny bone of kids and adults alike as they follow the adventures of 47 beavers stranded in a rowboat in the middle of the ocean. Featuring a fun rhyme and vibrant illustrations, the book builds on the concept of Ecclesiates Two people are better than one. They get more done by working together. Vischer and his wife, Lisa, live in the Chicago, IL with their 3 children.

Based on the idea that knowledge is power, The Big Green Book of the Big Blue Sea shows how the ocean works and why this immense ecosystem needs our protection. Experiments using everyday materials help explain scientific concepts, such as why the ocean is salty, how temperature affects water density and why fish don't get waterlogged. A focus on pollution and other ecological hazards raises awareness. Newsy sidebars bring readers up to date on efforts to combat environmental hazards such as the use of oysters to help squelch pollution in urban waterways. An ideal tool for classroom use or the perfect way to spend a rainy day, The Big Green Book of the Big Blue Sea is an essential part of any science library.

A s soon as I saw the beautiful cover of this book, I was sold. The second reason was the synopsis. Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea by April G Tucholke is a modern gothic horror, a novel which seamlessly blends together some seriously morally wrong supernatural powers and a passionate romance, which will make you question what is wrong and right in a relationship. I found this book harrowing and slightly scary at times. This means serious business coming from a reader who absolutely adores books which grip you from the skin under and leave remnants of their words in your mind, months after flipping through the last pages. Violet is a strange girl, and I loved how April characterised her.
