2016 Battle of the Books

CMC Sunshine State Books

Why you ask? Picture this: children standing outside the public library automatic sliding doors in the month of May. The Sunshine State books are coveted and hoarded by children all over the state of Florida each year. These titles literally fly off the shelves of stores and public libraries. Libraries have wait lists 50 students long waiting for the popular titles to come available. There are two Sunshine State Young Reader Book lists — one for elementary grades and one for middle grades.

I wrote a post on tips on how to raise a reader and you can read it HERE. She was the ONLY reader in her class to attend every party that was held in the school media center celebrating students who had read XYZ number of books by a given date. Once she finished the grades list, she began a few on the grades list. But she got bored quickly because she wasn't reading them for a "prize" and so she wanted to read books of her own choosing instead. No problem with me.

The list for grades has a repeat author, Lisa Graff. I don't see any of the authors on the list as being repeat nominees. But I see a new one that has me excited!! DJ Machale!! He writes the hugely popular Pendragon series! Ronin loved that series!! Parents and teachers, get a jump on everyone else by having your kids read a few of the titles over the summer.
