Should You Read Star Wars Books in Chronological Order?

These are the most common questions for people coming into the world of Star Wars books at least, they were for me. Just counting the new canon, there are almost two dozen novels out — with more on the way. The game stoked my appetite for more, so I finally decided it was finally time to get serious about the books. It seemed as good a plan as any, so I dove into the Lost Tribe of the Sith collection, which lays the foundation for an isolated group of Sith that reappears later in the Expanded Universe and paints an interesting picture of the galaxy five thousand years before the Battle of Yavin. I even took my first steps into the world of comics and graphic novels by bingeing the entire run of Dawn of the Jedi comics.

For many fans of Star Wars who decide to read the books, the Expanded Universe - generally referred to as the EU - can appear much like wild space—crowded, confusing, and potentially dangerous. The EU, like anything, is very manageable with a bit of direction. They provide you with a feel for what kind of stories are out there and prepare you for everything that comes after. After reading the foundational books, your reading journey is in your hands. Ultimately, the Expanded Universe has something for everyone to enjoy. Along the way, it tells a love story that rivals that of Anakin and Padme. Claudia Gray is among the elite Star Wars authors when it comes to crafting compelling stories.

This page contains information about a confirmed future group of books. The content of the page may change dramatically as the product release approaches and more information becomes available. This is a timeline for books considered canon in the new continuity. It is not for comics or short stories. This timeline is organized chronologically and in six different categories.

This is a simple list of all of the full-length Star Wars novels to date, in chronological order of when the stories take place. This list does not include most young readers' books or short novellas. Books whose stories overlap within the same timeline are listed in recommended reading order based on my own judgement. A large number of derivative Star Wars works have been produced in conjunction with, between, and after the original trilogy of films, and later installments. This body of work was collectively known as the Star Wars expanded universe for decades. The company's focus would be shifted towards a restructured Star Wars canon based on new material. This is a list of original novels, novel adaptations, original junior novels, junior novel adaptations, young readers, and short stories in the Star Wars franchise. This list does not include journals, graphic novels or comic books, which can be found in the list of Star Wars comic books.
