Learn to paint like the Old Masters | [email protected]For this tutorial we'll take an in-depth look at the benefits of copying an Old Master painting. I've chosen to copy a portion of the painting Jeanne, by William Adolphe Bouguereau. There are many artists who I admire, but I think Bouguereau sits at the top of my list because of his technical mastery. I've worked in the video game industry for 13 years, as a freelance artist and a gallery artist, and while my subjects and clients are varied, I've always been able to look to Bouguereau for inspiration. The goal of doing a master copy is three-fold. The first goal is to learn from the aesthetic sensibilities of the artist you choose to copy. This is key to developing taste or connoisseurship.

As I said elsewhere in my site, my main goal is to share my knowledge with as many people as possible; and the membership fee is so low that using the Teaching Zone will be affordable to practically everyone interested in the Old Masters' oil painting technique. The Teaching Zone was created on the basis of the my Video Workshop and takes the form of an Internet book with appropriate interactive multimedia technology. This is my first video course of classical painting technique. It is not just an art workshop. This is my first action for the ecology of culture. Exponents of modern art may find some of my ideas politically incorrect.
01. Choose your Master
That goes for when I was learning to dance, swim, draw, or paint in oil. You observe space and objects differently and evaluate what is in front of you with an artistic sensibility. Then you can accelerate in your abilities and learn more complex techniques more easily. But learning these time-honored oil-painting lessons is not a matter of reading through some dusty tome or secret scroll. Instead, it is a matter of doing and painting. To that end, we share the concepts we believes are behind every beautiful fine-art oil painting in our newest free eBook, Oil Painting Techniques.
