House of Stairs by William SleatorThis chilling, suspenseful indictment of mind control is a classic of science fiction and will haunt readers long after the last page is turned. One by one, five sixteen-year-old orphans are brought to a strange building. It is not a prison, not a hospital; it has no walls, no ceiling, no floor. Nothing but endless flights of stairs leading nowhere—except back to a strange red machine. The five must learn to love the machine and let it rule their lives. But will they let it kill their souls? William Sleator — was the author of numerous science fiction books for children and young adults, including Interstellar Pig, House of Stairs, and Blackbriar.

Update It wound up becoming one of the most visited pages on my site, and I wondered whether I ought to keep it continually updated Maybe every five or ten books, say. As it turned out, Sleator died in , having released three books since I posted my article. Unless he's got a bunch more packed away in a trunk somewhere, this will be the only update. I actually wouldn't be all that surprised if he did have such a trunk somewhere. Hell, given how prolific he was, I wouldn't be all that surprised if he'd lost a manuscript or two under the sofa.

I remember this book from when I was a teen and it was pretty cool. The late 80s fashion and hair are hardly selling this book in I loved this book when I read it in high school. I had an after school job shelving books in the public library and I would bring home armloads of books like this. Too bad the terrible cover art will probably turn off future readers. This is an awesome book!
