Properties of Cement- Physical & Chemical - Civil Engineering

International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials. This paper examines some properties of concrete, such as strength, oxygen permeability and sorptivity using starch [cassava CA and maize MS ] as admixtures. Concrete cubes containing different percentages of the CA and MS by weight of cement 0, 0. Oxygen permeability and sorptivity tests data obtained were subjected to Kruskal—Wallis one-way analysis of variance by ranks. These results showed a decrease in oxygen permeability and rates of sorptivity, with concretes containing starch as admixtures giving better performance than the control concretes.

Cement, a popular binding material, is a very important civil engineering material. This article concerns the physical and chemical properties of cement , as well as the methods to test cement properties. Different blends of cement used in construction are characterized by their physical properties. Some key parameters control the quality of cement. The physical properties of good cement are based on:.

Concrete has relatively high compressive strength , but significantly lower tensile strength. As a result, [ further explanation needed ] without compensating, concrete would almost always fail from tensile stresses — even when loaded in compression. The practical implication of this is that concrete elements subjected to tensile stresses must be reinforced with materials that are strong in tension often steel. The elasticity of concrete is relatively constant at low stress levels but starts decreasing at higher stress levels as matrix cracking develops. Concrete has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion , and as it matures concrete shrinks. All concrete structures will crack to some extent, due to shrinkage and tension. Concrete which is subjected to long-duration forces is prone to creep.

The reuse of construction waste gives two aims, the first is to remove large quantities of pollution resulted from these waste, the second provides cheap resources for concrete aggregates. This study conducted a series of experiments and tests to test the feasibility of reusing this iron slag and recycled concrete aggregate in concrete mixtures.
