The Ultimate Guide to Writing with Google Docs | Lulu BlogI used to be a die-hard Scrivener fan, and while that program is still one of the very best out there for fiction writers, I have fallen in love with writing in Google Docs. Watch the video below or head over to my YouTube Channel to comment over there. Prefer to read, instead? I want to cry and pull my hair out just thinking about it. I have had files get corrupted and lost in the past, and it was the most heart breaking experience for me. Totally devastating.
How To Write A Book In Google Docs
Google Docs is a popular word-processing tool that lets you access your documents and files from any internet-connected device. I for one have found it to be immensely useful as an editing tool; I like to review a Doc on my iPad, and then make changes on my laptop before sending the updated Doc to my collaborators. Google Docs makes it easy to work with people both near and far, but do you know how to use it to its full capacity?
For the past ten years or so, I have mostly used Scrivener to write my books. It makes backups a breeze and it tracks your daily word count as you write. It can also do an enormous amount of other stuff. You can take snapshots of individual scenes and chapters in a work, and then roll back changes if you are unhappy with them. It can show views of your work as an outline or as a set of index cards. It lets you keep your research material alongside your work in progress. I have unhesitatingly recommended it to anyone who asked for advice on writing software, and to many people who have not.
Wondering how to write a book in Google Docs? Not only is Google Docs completely online, which means you can be anywhere and have access, but you can also use this software to share your manuscript with your editor, writing coach, and beta readers. In this video, I share my screen and show my Google Docs book outline template, which walks you step-by-step through the process of formatting a book. These are the same formatting guidelines that have helped my clients to become published authors. And I have a bonus tip on how to find your word count! In this video you will learn how to write a book in Google Docs.
Full stop. For all of your text editing needs, Google Docs is positioned to be superior to even the old standard, Microsoft Word.
