From Italian cook books to guide books and language books to detective novels set in Italy, we have tried hard not to leave a single page unturned! So these are all books we have read.

Italy is the 5th most visited country by international tourists, has the most UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world and is an incredible setting for literature. To help make order of these books set in Italy, titles are arranged by date of publication from oldest to newest. Some of the contemporary novels near the end are next on my to-read list; including Beautiful Ruins one of those book covers I keep seeing prominently displayed in every bookstore I visit and The Solitude of Prime Numbers. The history of the place would lend itself to all manner of lush and romantic tales, and having seen cities such as Venice, I can easily envision a swoonworthy courtship happening along the canals, or in the Boboli gardens or amidst the bustle and grand historic buildings of Rome. Since I loved the romantic cities and sights of Italy not to mention the food and wine! Forster moments. And, though perhaps a little melodramatic, Lord of the Night by Susan Wiggs remains one of my favorite Italian historicals. Set in Renaissance Venice, this tale of a young woman determined to become a celebrated courtesan and the older man she falls in love with stuck with me long after I first read it.

The art and culture of cities like Florence and Rome, the lagos of the North, the Tuscan countryside and the splendors of Venice-Italy conjures up a picture of life as only its spectacular regions can. The following finely crafted novels all portray Italy with great fervor-and Italy gives each work a rich sampling of Italian life. A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway is, of course, a much-loved novel and classic of twentieth century literature. It is the love story of a soldier and nurse during the First World War, epic in nature and certainly difficult to forget.
