What is some good advice for aspiring novelists who want to publish for the first time? Finish the novel before you try to get an agent. Though I have a strong idea of the through-line from the beginning, I always discover things as I go along—ideas I want to draw out, and develop, characters that blossom surprisingly, or else ideas that are dead-ends, that need to be pruned.
