4 Steps to Choosing Books at Child's Reading LevelThe Lexile system is the most widely-used measure of readability around the world. Since January , a growing number of children in the UK have had their Lexile level assessed in school. They receive the results as a measure, [number]L, which can be used to find books that they will enjoy at an appropriate level of difficulty, supporting reluctant readers and stretching more confident ones. For instance, a child with Lexile level L will find books at level L relatively easy to read, and books at level L a little more challenging but still accessible. For best reading progress, books from points below to to 50 points above your child's level are recommended.

The Multnomah County Library created its own leveling system, Welcome to Reading, for every beginning reader book it owns to create a much simpler way to find books at the right level for our young patrons learning to read. The library knows finding books for children who are beginning to read is challenging. With so many publishers creating its own reading level metrics, and leveling companies like Accelerated Reader and Lexile leveling only titles from publishers that subscribe to their services, it's no wonder parents and educators and the readers themselves struggle to find their right book.
