Buying a digital book for your iPad is a very odd experience. If you fire up iTunes, you can find music, movies, apps, even audiobooks, but there is no category for digital books. You need to first download the iBooks app, and then buy books within that app. So it is like a marketplace within a marketplace that also happens to be a reader. The Kindle app also works that way.

The iPad is a great tool for reading e-books. The iPad can carry hundreds of magazines, books, and comics in a package that fits in a backpack. Combine that with the Retina Display screen on the tablet to make an excellent reading device. Whether you download free e-books for your iPad or purchase e-books from an online store, you have to copy the books to your iPad before you can enjoy them. There are a few ways to sync books to your iPad, and the method you use depends on how you sync your iPad and how you like to read books. If a book is in a format that's not supported by the device, convert it to a different file format.

You can use Apple products -- including the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch -- to do just about anything, including read books. These products accept books from multiple sources as long you save the books in the ePub digital format. Click "Books" under "Library" from the left-hand side of iTunes. If you do not see "Books," find it by clicking "Preferences" from the main toolbar if you are on a Mac, or "Edit" and "Preferences" if you are on a PC. Under "Sources," check the box next to "Books" and click "OK" to finish. Drag and drop the eReader book from where it is saved on your computer to the "Books" folder on iTunes. Connect your Apple device to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
