Ancient Greek philosophy arose in the 6th century BC and continued throughout the Hellenistic period and the period in which Greece and most Greek-inhabited lands were part of the Roman Empire. Philosophy was used to make sense out of the world in a non-religious way. It dealt with a wide variety of subjects, including astronomy , mathematics , political philosophy , ethics , metaphysics , ontology , logic , biology , rhetoric and aesthetics. Greek philosophy has influenced much of Western culture since its inception. Alfred North Whitehead once noted: "The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato". Greek philosophy was influenced to some extent by the older wisdom literature and mythological cosmogonies of the ancient Near East , though the extent of this influence is debated. The classicist Martin Litchfield West states, "contact with oriental cosmology and theology helped to liberate the early Greek philosophers' imagination; it certainly gave them many suggestive ideas.

It is largely by technology that contemporary society hangs together. It is hugely important not only as an economic force but also as a cultural force. Indeed during the last two centuries, when it gradually emerged as a discipline, philosophy of technology has mostly been concerned with the meaning of technology for, and its impact on, society and culture, rather than with technology itself. Only recently a branch of the philosophy of technology has developed that is concerned with technology itself and that aims to understand both the practice of designing and creating artifacts in a wide sense, including artificial processes and systems and the nature of the things so created. This latter branch of the philosophy of technology seeks continuity with the philosophy of science and with several other fields in the analytic tradition in modern philosophy, such as the philosophy of action and decision-making, rather than with the humanities and social science. The entry starts with a brief historical overview, then continues with a presentation of the themes on which modern analytic philosophy of technology focuses.
Pre-Socratic philosophy is ancient Greek philosophy before Socrates and schools contemporary to Socrates that were not influenced by him. They introduced to the West the notion of the world as a kosmos , an ordered arrangement that could be understood via rational inquiry. Aristotle was the first to make a clear distinction between these physiologoi or physikoi "physicists", after physis , " nature " who sought natural explanations for phenomena , and the earlier theologoi theologians , or mythologoi story tellers and bards who attributed these phenomena to various gods. Edouard Zeller was also important in dividing thought before and after Socrates. It may sometimes be difficult to determine the actual line of argument some pre-Socratics used in supporting their particular views.
