Our 9th Grade Homeschool Reading List

The books include images, descriptions, and links. Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than fifty conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some , child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer?

Although there has been debate over the past few decades about requiring high school students to read the classics , these works still appear on many 9th grade reading lists. Written at a level appropriate for most freshmen, they will nonetheless challenge students to develop stronger reading, writing, and analytical skills, and they also encourage discussion about many aspects of the human condition. This frankly told tale of the horrors of war was written by someone who lived it while fighting as a German soldier in World War I. Orwell 's devastating satire of the move from tyranny to revolution and back to tyranny remains as relevant a tale of totalitarianism masquerading as equality today as it was when it was published in , targeting the abuses of Soviet Russia. In , Griffin, a white journalist, set out to journey through the American South in the guise of a black man he had his skin temporarily darkened to report on the realities of life under segregation. Along the way, he confronts his own prejudices and bursts the myth that racism is more paranoia than reality. A novel at once comedic and tragic, "Great Expectations" centers on a poor young man by the name of Pip, who is given the chance to make himself a gentleman by a mysterious benefactor.

Fanciful cartoon drawings show a lively and appealing world full of new and intriguing activities that correspond neatly to modern equivalents. Interaction with the natural world is not mentioned, although many of the new technologies have eco-friendly components and the food is all meatless and delicious. As climbers are cut from the team, tensions build, personalities clash and the remaining hopefuls struggle to deal with their own fears and weaknesses. The typical pace is at least one book per month for her lit class, and another one when that book is finished. She has her eye on a few books and definitely takes advantage of our library system! Overall not a huge list for the year, but several of the books are fairly hefty and will involve a lot of essay writing and discussion, so definitely enough to keep her busy for the year!
