Fantasy Books for Kids
Modern Fantasy. Modern fantasy is a genre of literature that is closely related to traditional literature. The biggest difference is the fact that the books that fall into this genre are not originally told orally. This works are written down by known authors who can be identified, unlike traditional literature where the original author is unknown. While this is the biggest difference, readers of this genre will notice that there are still many similarities between the two. For example, much like traditional literature, modern fantasy sometimes uses talking animals as characters. In addition to this, readers will still encounter magical realms or spells and mythological figures, like gods and goddesses.

What is Modern Fantasy? Modern Fantasy is distinguished from other genres by story elements that viloate the natural, physical laws of our world. Stories in this genre include such elements as talking animals, imaginary worlds, fanciful charachers, and magical beings. Authors of modern fantasy do not merely make up an imaginary story. They must create a setting with a new set of physical laws, believeable characters, and a credible plot. These stories should invite the reader to examine issues of the human condition and believe that such world could really exist.

They are tales told in a form similar to that of a traditional tale with the accompanying typical elements: little character description, strong conflict, fast-moving plot with a sudden resolution, vague setting, and sometimes magical elements. However, these tales were original and written by known authors. They are stories in which animals behave as human beings in that they experience emotions, talk, and have the ability to reason. The animals in fantasies also retain many of their animal characteristics.
Fantasy is my jam so of course now that I have a child, I want her to have all the fantasy things. Thankfully, there are plenty of fantasy books for kids out there. But that can also be overwhelming. My time as the young adult and middle grade shelver at work and as a middle school reading tutor showed me how hard it is for parents to find age-appropriate material for their kids. And publishers are rarely helpful with their age delineations: 6—10 years, 1st grade—7th, etc. Those are pretty big age ranges for kids.
