Book Review: The Lost For Words Bookshop by Stephanie Butland – Fraser’s Fun HouseA quirky — if somewhat chaotic — second-hand bookshop in York seems to be the perfect place to file away your secrets from prying eyes. Stephanie Butland, a Northumberland-born author who doubles up as a creative thinking tutor, is an inspirational cancer survivor and not short of the northern grit and wit that form the backbone of this heartbreaking and original novel of friendship, family and books. Twenty-five-year-old Loveday Cardew prefers books to people. She writes poems in her spare time and for the past ten years she has worked at the Lost For Words second-hand bookshop in York. She likes sorting and filing the books, while the owner — amiable, affable Archie — is happy chatting to the customers.

The Lost for Words Bookshop
Thank you! Loveday Cardew—an anti-social, tattooed year-old—works at Lost for Words, a secondhand bookstore in York. Switching between the past and present, the chapters are organized by genre—Poetry, History, Crime, Travel, and Memoir—and correspond to the plot i. The buildup to and aftermath of this moment feel earned and purposeful. However, other things do not. Unfortunately, the book sometimes veers into unnecessary stereotypes about mental illness by equating perhaps unintentionally being mentally ill with violent behavior.
