1. The Jackson Friends Series by Michelle Edwards

I simply could not come up with a specfic theme for chapter books for 5 year olds to 8 year olds, and so you will have to accept the eclectic-ness of my curation today. Generally these kids are in first grade and above, but some kindergarteners are ready for these books, too. I became very interested in this type of book because my older son was an early reader so finding material that suited his reading level and was still age appropriate for a kindergartener and 1st grader was a continuing challenge. I ended up reading these aloud to my youngest son, who is now 6 years old, so you know they are all kid and parent-approved. Of course these books can all be enjoyed by boys and girls alike. These 20 early chapter books are great choices for boys, though any young reader, boy or girl, is sure to love the humor, adventure, and heart in these fantastic stories. Hank is an endearing protagonist, always making his classmates and his readers laugh with his funny antics and adventures. His struggles with math, and reading, and spelling, and, well, school in general are relatable, and his efforts to try his best and save the day are quite admirable. George Brown wants nothing more than to be a normal, responsible year-old kid, but his efforts tend to land him in big trouble thanks to his super burps. Those magical and pesky belches promise disaster for George Brown and a whole lot of laughs for readers. Growing readers will appreciate the large text, funny illustrations, and familiar classroom setting. Funny characters, wacky escapades, and sibling shenanigans make this a perfect series for budding readers to dive into.
