Sales Tax by State: In Which States are Textbooks Tax Exempt?

Our first print book recently went live through KDP. When I tried to order author copies, I was going to be charged sales tax so I didn't place the order. With CreateSpace I didn't pay sales tax on author copies. CS accepted that because we would be charging sales tax when we resold the author copies. I was directed to the Amazon Tax Exempt Program. There I uploaded my permit and was told that wasn't a tax exempt form, and I was given the numbers of forms that would work.

If you sell your book at a different New York fair that's four days long, you're obligated to collect and remit sales taxes on the sales during that fourth day. And, of course, there's a form for doing that. The Balance Careers uses cookies to provide you with a great user experience.

Digital sales of these goods have greatly increased while sales of similar products in physical form have experienced a sharp decline. Historically, customers only purchased physical items such as CDs, VHS cassettes, or paper books, that could be weighed, packaged, mailed, carried, or driven. No one envisioned the possibility of a future where products and services could be delivered online.
