Tahoe A Visual HistoryAn unprecedented new exhibit featuring years of art expressing the Tahoe experience goes on display on Aug. It presents historical paintings, Native baskets, photography, architecture and contemporary art that interpret Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass and the surrounding Sierra Nevada. The book includes nearly illustrations and about 80 percent of the objects will be on view in the exhibition, said Ann Wolfe, senior curator and deputy director. Art produced in and about a place helps define its cultural identity. Wolfe promises that the breadth of the exhibit will surprise even the most well-versed Tahoe aficionados. However, she adds that the majority of this artwork is unknown as it comes from private and museum collections outside the region and has never been seen publicly.

The railroad tracks are barely there too, at first glance possibly mistaken for a fallen tree. The emphasis is all warm sun, fluffy clouds and glorious terrain, untouched by man. Those views of Lake Tahoe and the Donner Pass — a complex story of realism and idealism — lie at the heart of a new exhibition and book organized by the Nevada Museum of Art.

This publication records the art history of Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass, and the surrounding Sierra region for the first time. This is a magnificent book. The format of the book, as well as the contents, lend to the magnificence. Some of the art reproductions or photographs span two full pages. The title belies the fact that although there is a lot of Lake Tahoe, there is also a surprising amount of Donner Summit and Donner Lake, and quite a bit about Native American basketry. The first thing you will do is page through it getting an idea of what to go back to and in which order to enjoy the visual feasts. It is a large collection of paintings including some of Donner Summit or Donner Lake that have been in the Heirloom.
