There is no user-friendly, seeker-sensitive Gospel. In this workbook, pastor, teacher, and best-selling author John MacArthur takes you step by step through each main idea of his insightful and sometimes shocking new book, Hard to Believe. Jesus Christ did not die on the cross so you and I could have a nice day. Ministers and teachers who water down the gospel of Christ in order to make it more popular and appealing may be leading their fun-loving audiences down the road to eternal punishment. This book is John MacArthur's unflinching, unapologetic treatise on the modern tendency to alter the true message of Christianity in order to meet the whims and desires of a culture hoping for nonconfrontational messages, easy answers, and superficial commitments. Too many people just want a Madison Avenue Jesus to make them well, make them happy, and make them prosperous. But Jesus Christ isn't a personal genie. He is the Savior. He died in agony to satisfy the wrath of a holy God and to forgive the sins of humankind.

I was surprised to find out after I read this book how controversial it had been when first published. The copy I have read is the revised version, lacking the controversial paragraph which purportedly implies works-based salvation. Honestly, I strongly believe that if it was this one paragraph that caused the controversy, the people who first picked up on it failed to read the book in its entirety. On the surface, it makes sense. Spice up the presentation. Tone down the preaching. Tell people that Jesus will meet their felt needs. But is making unbelievers comfortable truly the way to make disciples? Does promising the lost that Jesus can fix their lives bring them any closer to salvation, or are we selling them a synthetic gospel that cannot save?

John MacArthur gets to the heart of Christian faith and discipleship by revealing the challenging things Jesus had to say about being His true follower. Popular perception of Jesus Christ is that of a tempered, genteel man who walked the earth, offering nuggets of wisdom to His followers. But what we sometimes fail to recognize is that although Jesus Christ offered a message of forgiveness, He also spoke challenging, demanding words about what being a follower of Christ requires. In contrast to the superficiality of much modern Christian teaching, John serves up the unvarnished truth of what Christ taught and lived. In simple, compelling terms, he spells out what is required of those who would follow Him.
