Michael C. Janeway, a former editor of The Boston Globe and executive editor of The Atlantic Monthly who wrote two books chronicling what he saw as the intertwined decline of democracy and journalism in the United States, died on Thursday at his home in Lakeville, Conn. He was Janeway joined The Globe in as the Sunday magazine editor and worked his way up the ranks during the end of the era of its influential and much-loved editor Thomas Winship. He served three years as managing editor before being appointed in to succeed Mr. Winship, who was retiring.
The Globe had named columnist Shirley Leung as interim editorial page editor last August, but Leung stepped down from that role to resume her column earlier this year.
