Ian McEwan's Atonement
The first thing I read when I was given this novel was the blurb. It turned out that it was. To be fair, McEwan writes better sex than most. His style has an easy rhythm no pun intended and is set off by the occasional eye-catching line. Generous applause for cheesy one-liners of the twenty-first century, number… This is not the only instance of showboating. And make no mistake, there are rules. Rule number one is that, criticism aside, you should never write about writing.

Atonement is a British family saga novel written by Ian McEwan concerning the understanding and responding to the need for personal atonement. Set in three time periods, England, wartime England and France, and present-day England, it covers an upper-class girl's half-innocent mistake that ruins lives; her adulthood in the shadow of that mistake; and a reflection on the nature of writing. Widely regarded as one of McEwan's best works, it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize for fiction. Briony Tallis, a year-old English girl with a talent for writing, lives at her family's country estate with her parents.
