Availability: The golden compass [electronic resource (EPUB eBook)] / Philip Pullman. One of the best audiobooks EVER! It's like listening to a play in your ears- I loved the variety of voices and music, and it didn't feel jumbled at all! This was a fun novel, if a bit dark for kids, and worked really well as an audiobook - it's pretty much a full-cast for the audiobook or what seemed to be. I'll be continuing the series, but not rushing to the next. I loved the audiodrama! The cast was amazing, and the story--though, Lyra was a little bit too clever at times I wish she'd have struggled a bit more to piece things together --was exciting and engaging! Pullman's world building is undoubtedly original and imaginative, but the characters in this story are so uninteresting that not once did I care about any of them.
The Golden Compass
Set in a parallel universe , it features the journey of Lyra Belacqua to the Arctic in search of her missing friend, Roger Parslow, and her imprisoned uncle, Lord Asriel , who has been conducting experiments with a mysterious substance known as " Dust ". Northern Lights is the first book of a trilogy, His Dark Materials to Pullman won the Carnegie Medal from the Library Association , recognising the year's outstanding British children's book. The novel is set in a world dominated by an international theocracy , the Magisterium also commonly called "the Church" , which actively suppresses heresy. One day, she witnesses the Master poison wine intended for Lord Asriel , Lyra's rebellious and adventuring uncle.
The project was announced in February , but difficulties over the script and the selection of a director caused significant delays. The film depicts the adventures of Lyra Belacqua , an orphan living in a parallel universe where a dogmatic ruling power called the Magisterium opposes free inquiry. Children in that universe are being kidnapped by an unknown group called the Gobblers who are supported by the Magisterium. Lyra joins a tribe of sea-farers on a trip to the far North, the land of the armoured polar bears , in search of the missing children. Before its release, the film received criticism from secularist organisations and fans of the His Dark Materials trilogy for the dilution of elements of the story which were critical of religion, as well as from some religious organisations for the source material's anti-religious themes.

North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra : a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want.

There are many universes and many Earths parallel to each other. Worlds where Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy was turned into a series of blockbuster movies, each better than the last. And worlds like ours, where the series crapped the bed after a single bloated, confused outing that was mired in meddling and flaccid compromise, and succeeded only in enraging everybody that it was supposed to pander to. The film in this world is The Golden Compass, and it's rubbish. A bear punches another bear's jaw off in it, and it's still rubbish.
