As far as used bookshelf-style speakers go, these are hard to beat, since they sound as good as a larger bass reflex speaker without the boominess associated with ported designs. These are acoustic suspension speakers, but with a twist: they employ a "passive radiator", a cone without a magnet, to boost bass output, resulting in tight, accurate bass that is superior to my ear than any dimensionally similar large bookshelf speaker I'm aware of. Excellent power handling and frequency response; the HD-9s are acoustically transparent in the mid and high end, but not brittle and harsh, like a comparable Infinity ceramic tweeter. The HD-9 uses a soft dome tweeter that, with some recordings, actually require less treble control than you may be used to. As with any bookshelf type speaker, getting them off the floor and away from walls with allow their natural ability to produce tight, accurate bass to come out.
Boston Acoustics speakers have always sounded swell, but looked a little drab. That's all changed with the new Vista Series, which may be the best sounding Bostons yet. Boston Acoustics was in Manhattan earlier this week to demonstrate its new Vista Series speakers. Boston kicked up the styling and all of the speakers feature radical "wave-like" curves and drop dead gorgeous lacquer paint jobs. The high gloss black was beautiful, but the cherry wood was a knockout! Really hot stuff and durable too -- one of Boston's people actually took out his keys and tried to scratch the speaker's paint -- but the finish remained pristine.
I picked up a set of HD9's that have a blown woofer. Are they worth I have a set of Boston Acoustics HD speakers, though I haven't used them in the past 4 years. Though I think BA makes a great bookshelf speaker.
