Barbara Demick on the best books on Bosnia

One of the best third-party accounts of the civil war in the s is this book by Misha Glenny , a British journalist who reported on the civil war for the BBC and now writes for The Guardian. Given that the book covers the outbreak and ensuing conflict around the region, it is not exclusively about Bosnia, but the wider picture is necessary to fully understand why the conflict happened and why it was so bloody. Glenny writes with an unbiased point of view, with a style that is clear and simple but yet covers all the important details. A great introduction as to why Bosnia exists in the way it does today. During the siege she kept this diary, which was then published after she and her family were able to flee to Paris in

HISTORY, like hate, is the product of memory, and memory is composed of unforgettable detail -- sights, smells, sounds, exalted emotions, grim statistics and cruel ironies. A memory is not subject to condensation. Made to fit inside the narrow strictures of a television sound bite or a newspaper column, it loses all meaning. It becomes just another lifeless fact that can never convey how people have come to think and behave as they do. The Balkans are a region of pure memory: a Bosch-like tapestry of interlocking ethnic rivalries where medieval and modern history thread into each other. More complicated and less visually exotic than the Middle East, the Balkans are unsuited to the reductions of the television camera. A recent ABC News special, "Land of the Demons," showed footage from Bosnia, but even with rock music playing in the background the effect was flat.

One of my goals while travelling the last couple of years was to read books set in the countries we were travelling. Join me on a literary journey through the history of this conflicted area. While most of these books are fiction they are based on many true events and people from the area and provide a good insight into some of the things that have occurred in the distant and recent past. During her time in Kosovo Elizabeth learns Albanian and makes friends with many locals and tells parts of their stories throughout her novel. She also learns new skills and is involved in several projects, the most prominent being her beekeeping endeavours. The book also includes recipes from all of the traditional Kosovan food she learnt about. Many of his earlier novels were banned in Albania and he was forced to seek political asylum in France.
