Books You Need to Read to Understand Marxism

I like books that get back to ultimate causes and that think like social scientists about these causes. There are a number of traditional answers, but the most prominent among them is this idea that in a modern economy there is a skill bias in technical change.

Seven of my favourite books for understanding capitalism

We know capitalism is killing us. Especially those of us who came of age in the 21st century: we know it is the underlying cause of poverty, the main driver of climate change, and it is responsible for more deaths than we can count. We have to work against it if we want to survive. We have to organize and fight back against austerity and neoliberalism, but to do that we need to be able to articulate how capitalism is at the root of almost every major political issue. What does the war in Syria have to do with capitalism? How do capitalists coerce us into being good workers?

Since the beginning of last year, Business Insider has been exploring the momentum behind this shift — why we need "Better Capitalism," as we call it, and how we can achieve it. Our series started with the rejection of the shareholder primacy theory that grew in popularity in the late s and became the norm beginning in the '80s. That theory led to a short-term focus on profits above all else, and we're arguing that this has come at the expense of other stakeholders, and has been a significant factor in the country's out-of-control wage-and-wealth inequality. We've found that there is an increasingly loud call to tie profits to purpose, and it's not just a moral argument. To make sense of where we are today and where we should be headed, we've gathered some of our favorite books on the economy and the role of business in society.

Capitalism — and more specifically its failings — is likely to be as brashly and uncompromisingly in the headlines this year as it has been over the past 12 months.
