He wrote books, most of which were fiction, and at his death in they were all still in print. Most still are today. In his memoir, The Education of a Wandering Man , he makes it clear that the two went hand in hand. His travels were his way of learning by direct experience, but he augmented that with a tremendous and voracious appetite for the vicarious learning that comes through reading. Often I hear people say they do not have the time to read. In one year during which I kept that kind of record, I read twenty-five books while waiting for people.

I am struggling to bring a few products to market. They are all related, having one common thread that ties them together. The hold up is that I am taking an old idea and presenting it in a new way. In Zero to One , Peter Thiel says that your new product offering must be at least 10 times better that what is on the market. What I have now is better, but I am not sure if it is 10 times better yet. So, I have a self-education reading list, hoping that I will find the secret sauce to make my products at least 10 times better. I find that, for me, reading is one of the best ways to self-educate.

S aying that college is necessary to becoming successful in business is like saying that college made Tom Brady the greatest quarterback of all time or that John Mayer is a great musician because he went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Sure, college didn't hurt them but e ach of these guys achieved success in the same way most entrepreneurs do, by improving on their craft outside of the classroom. Those guys made themselves valuable in a way that college couldn't possibly do for them. No one is going to buy into your business because of your academic credentials, so why waste 4 years of your life and possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars chasing a line on a resume no one will ever read? You can always go back later. I promise, as long as they are making money there will be colleges until the day you die they'd let you attend post mortem if possible too.
