best month for bird watching - New Zealand Forum - TripAdvisorThe first third of the book provides 74 colour plates and facing-page descriptions of every species of living bird recorded from New Zealand. There is even a page for five species exterminated since , just in case you should happen upon a huia or piopio at the bird bath. Although small, the illustrations are lucid, with most species depicted in all their guises non-breeding, immature, male, female, even in flight. Accompanying descriptions give physical details, a distribution map, habitat and calls for each species. But there is much more. Expect to find all that is significant, but no wasted words. The volume has a pleasing heft to it, but is not too bulky to be squeezed into the corner of a rucksack.
Endemic Birds of New Zealand
Welcome to Birding New Zealand
It's almost a tradition for birders to complain about their field guides: a particular variation of plumage - male, female, juvenile, mating - isn't shown; a rare bird is missing; or, alternatively, a lot of guides have so much about the occasional migrants you never see that there isn't enough space for adequate coverage of the common birds you see quite often; and so on. Over the years Paul Scofield and Brent Stephenson, two of New Zealand's leading birders, have been among the complainers and now, with the help of Auckland University Press, they've done their best to provide the perfect guide. Their book is lavishly illustrated with photos - Stephenson is also a top bird photographer - showing a range of angles and stages of the plumage cycle; there are generous descriptions of appearance, calls and behaviour, tips on how to differentiate between similar species and, as a delightful bonus, notes on the origins of Maori, English and scientific names. Rare vagrants are covered in a smaller section at the back. The result is a superb guide to New Zealand birds and, unlike some, as strong on seabirds as on those of the forest.
New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. New Zealand is situated some 1, kilometres east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1, kilometres south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long period of isolation, New Zealand developed a distinct biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. New Zealand is long and narrow, over 1, kilometres along its north-north-east axis with a maximum width of kilometres with about 15, km of coastline and a total land area of , square kilometres. Because of its far-flung outlying islands and long coastline, the country has extensive marine resources.
