Books by Lemony Snicket | A Series of Unfortunate Events

In a world full of children's books that promised happy endings, the series delighted in throwing its young characters in dangerous and depressing situations, cheerfully providing readers with unhappy endings where the bad guys regularly won. Though it may not sound like it, it was also hilarious series that still cracks me up. To give you a brief recap, the series followed the sorrows of the Baudelaire children , whose parents died in a fire and left them a massive fortune. They fall into the care of the wicked Count Olaf , who's determined to steal their inheritance at any cost. Throughout the series the orphans are shuttled between multiple guardians, all of whom fail to keep them safe from Count Olaf. The Baudelaires are determined to stay out of his clutches while also investigating the mystery surrounding their parents' deaths. The series ran 13 books, and each book was more horrifying than the one that preceded it.

All the Lemony Snicket Books, Ranked Best to Worst

Before I picked up his books, Lemony Snicket, the genius who gave us The Series of Unfortunate Events , warned my younger self that I would be forever heartbroken, tear-streaked, and utterly devastated with how the Baudelaires' story turned out. If you didn't heed the warning signs either, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Although these books are charming, witty, and amazingly written, each one is also seriously upsetting. Count Olaf and his greedy rage to inherit the Baudelaire fortune never ceases to break throughout the series. Sure, they may be orphans, but inventive Violet, intelligent Klaus, and the razor-sharp teethed Sunny always managed a way out of their unfortunate circumstances.

This is probably the least believable of Count Olaf's disguises. A female receptionist named Shirley is hardly a clever disguise for a criminal mastermind. Also, if the Lucky Smells Lumbermills employees work for only coupons then how are they supposed to use those coupons if they have no money? Another unbelievable disguise but this time that disguise belongs to Sunny.

Although they are classified " children's novels ", the books often have a dark, mysterious feeling to them. The books follow the turbulent lives of Violet , Klaus , and Sunny Baudelaire. After their parents' death in a fire, the children are placed in the custody of a murderous relative, Count Olaf , who attempts to steal their inheritance and, later, orchestrates numerous disasters with the help of his accomplices as the children attempt to flee. As the plot progresses, the Baudelaires gradually confront further mysteries surrounding their family and deep conspiracies involving a secret society known as V. The series is narrated by Lemony Snicket, who dedicates each of his works to his deceased love interest, Beatrice, and often attempts to dissuade the reader from reading the Baudelaires' story. Characterized by Victorian Gothic tones and absurdist textuality, [5] [6] the books are noted for their dark humor, sarcastic storytelling, and anachronistic elements, as well as frequent cultural and literary allusions. Since the release of the first novel, The Bad Beginning , in September , the books have gained significant popularity, critical acclaim, and commercial success worldwide, spawning a film , a video game , assorted merchandise and a television series on Netflix.

This book brought on some serious unfortunate times for the Baudelaires. Good for them but I don't know many of us who would take that high road. . 23 Times "A Series Of Unfortunate Events" Was The Perfect Show For.
