General endocrinology (Book, ) []

Cell and Tissue Research. In Xenopus laevis Daud. Tadpoles ranging from stage 12 to 57 Nieuwkoop and Faber were fixed in Zamboni's or Bouin's solution. Frozen or paraffin sections of either total heads or dissected brains and eyes were prepared and treated with highly specific antisera against S-antigen and rod-opsin. Photoreceptors of the peripheral iridical portions of the retina gradually became immunoreactive during further development. At this and all later stages investigated rod-opsin immunoreactivity was restricted to a few dot-like structures resembling developing pineal outer and inner segments.

General endocrinology

Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. Ring doves, Streptopelia risoria , were raised to adult size on either low iodine or normal iodine semi-purified diets. Insufficient iodine elicited thyroid hyperplasia comparable to that previously reported in Great Lakes herring gulls, Larus argentatus. TCBP exposure also decreased the core body temperature, serum TT 4 , and TT 3 , indicating that low iodine euthyroidism changed to mild hypothyroidism. Acute exposure of the normal iodine doves did not cause hypothyroidism or affect thyroid histology, although serum TT 4 and TT 3 decreased significantly.

A new name sparked multidisciplinary research in endocrinology, which shed light on chemical communication in multicellular organisms. In June , Ernest Starling, a professor of physiology at University College London, UK, first used the word 'hormone' in one of four Croonian Lectures—'On the chemical correlation of the functions of the body'—delivered at the Royal College of Physicians in London. Starling Fig 1 was a brilliant experimentalist, and these prestigious lectures were in recognition of his work—much of it in collaboration with his brother-in-law William Bayliss—on the effects of innervations and pancreatic secretion on the intestine. Ernest Starling, a few years after he coined the word 'hormone'. Picture with permission from the Starling family. In addition to purely scientific advances, the study of hormones has led to enormous benefits to human health, social and economic progress, such as contraception, in vitro fertilization IVF and recombinant human hormones.
