Picture Book Review: The Dress and the Girl - Lu and Bean Read

Thank you! Around the turn of the last century, a Greek village girl wears her beloved red dress as she goes about her daily life only to be separated from it when the family emigrates. The child and her dress lead a seemingly idyllic, nature-filled life under blue skies, among whitewashed buildings, but they long for adventure. For unexplained reasons, the family boards a ship, where girl and dress play and go to school as before, details that subtly convey the length of the passage. Upon arrival at Ellis Island, the family is separated from the trunk in which the dress is now packed. The trunk, unclaimed, circles the globe in search of its rightful owners, eventually landing in a secondhand shop. Now grown, the girl spots her dress in the window and buys it for her own daughter.

The Dress and the Girl

This charming picture book is a touching story of a young Greek girl who finds a new life in America only to be separated from her favorite dress made by her mother. As the years pass, the girl and her dress seek to find one another in this new land. The story comes full circle when the young girl becomes a mother herself and spots her childhood dress in a store window. She is then able to share this once ordinary dress and the memories of it all with her daughter which makes for one extraordinary story. Inspired by a personal story, Camille Andros takes readers on a journey.

A little girl and her favorite dress dream of an extraordinary life. They enjoy simple pleasures together on a beautiful Greek island. They watch the sunset, do chores, and pick wildflowers on the way home. One day, the dress and the girl must leave the island and immigrate to the United States. Post a Comment. A little girl and her favorite dress live on a Greek island where they are happy together. They are inseparable as they jump rope on the way to school, play tag, and pick wildflowers. But one day the girl and her family leave Greece for the United States, and the two are separated when the girl's trunk is lost. Many years later, though, the dress finds its way back to the girl——now, herself, the mother of a little girl——when the girl spots it in a thrift store window. The two are finally reunited, and the memories of their times together flooding back.
