Life and Loves of a She Devil - Random House BooksThank you! A dozen or so years ago, this black-comic Avenging Woman fable might have been a bracing winner--especially if pared down to more flattering short-story dimensions. Now, following that long decade of angry-wife fiction, it's a stylish, sporadically amusing throwback. And when long-suffering Ruth shows a wee touch of displeasure, Bobbo declares: ""You are a third-rate person. You are a bad mother, a worse wife, and a dreadful cook. In fact I don't think you are a woman at all.
But the one that affected me most was written by an overlooked British icon — Fay Weldon. Its protagonist, the devilish Ruth Patchett, has had more impact on my adult adventures than my own mother. She taught me that the best — the only — way to exact revenge on a cruel and unjust world is to become rich, powerful and beautiful. In any order you like — for to become one provides the necessary tools to become the others. It is simply written.
The Life and Loves of a She-Devil is a novel by British feminist author Fay Weldon about a highly unattractive woman who goes to great lengths to take revenge on her husband and his attractive lover. The book, Weldon insists, is about envy, rather than revenge. Ruth is an abnormally tall and ugly housewife whose husband, Bobbo, considers their relationship an open marriage based on convenience alone and he only married her because he got her pregnant when they were both teenagers. Bobbo only truly loves his mistress , a famous, wealthy romance novelist named Mary Fisher. When Ruth passionately indicates her disapproval for Bobbo's extramarital affair , he calls her a "she-devil", causing her to reassess her life. She resolves to behave in accordance with the label he has given her.
