The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book by Bill Watterson | LibraryThingNo new comics you can't find in the other collections, but it does contain some of the best from this comic strip. And Bill Watterson's commentary on the strips is priceless for die hard fans of the classic. The real joy of this book is remembering, even for just a couple of hours, what it was like to be a kid. I don't know if the comics transported me there through writing or if it was just the nostalgia. I remember picking up Calvin and Hobbes for the first time at a garage sale.

A special tenth anniversary edition of comic cartoons starring the Calvin and Hobbes pair. Calvin, cheeky, hyperactive and mischievous, and Hobbes, his cuddly toy tiger who, as far as Calvin is concerned is very much alive and kicking, are two of the most loveable and hilarious characters to grace the comic strip in years. No one has captured children's world view and sense of imagination in cartoon strip form as well as Watterson. Nor applied it so strikingly to comment on adult life and attitudes or the general absurdity of the world in which we live Much will strike a chord and raise a knowing smile at their perception, but above all, they are very, very funny. Published for the strip's tenth anniversary Watterson actually ended the strip during year ten, but the book refers to the strip in the present tense throughout , the book selects a number of individual strips and storylines from across the lifetime of Calvin and Hobbes with commentary from Bill Watterson on how he wrote and drew the strip. The commentary is great: Watterson explains how he devised the characters and their world, discusses his battles with the syndicate over what the strip could be, and goes into the minutiae of panel placement in Sunday strips a thing I have remembered from this book since I read it at age Calvin and Hobbes really is a perfect comic strip: it's hard to imagine it working in any other medium even if the medium mostly produces crap these days.

These are invaluable as he tended to not give interviews and shied away from fame. Good times spent with my son pouring over the notes. Verified purchase: Yes Condition: Pre-owned.
